HTC is on Fire

July 29th, 2010

HTC is honestly becoming one of the most innovating phone companies out there in my eyes.  With the release of so many phones as of late all under what seems to be the Google Android Platform they are quickly changing the way many people including myself look at phones.  I have recently purchased the HTC Legend from Bell (a full review will be coming soon) and honestly just playing with the phone so far I am very impressed in not just the design of the phone but the way the phone works.  It is honestly so quick, and as of yet I have not seen it freeze or lag at all.  Something I find to happen a lot with many different brands of SmartPhones.

Five Tips For Entrepreneurial Success By Richard Branson to TodayOnline.com

July 21st, 2010
  • All of my top five tips for entrepreneurial success rely on getting the most out of your people

© 2010 Richard Branson (Distributed by The New York Times Syndicate) RICHARD BRANSON

Nicki McKenzie, of Malaga, Western Australia, asked: “If you were to list your top five rules for achieving success in business, what would they be and where would the ‘people factor’ come in?”

And on behalf of her students studying business at the high school level, teacher Annette Moran of Wavell Heights, Queensland, asked me a similar question.

The “people factor” appears over and over on my list of top five tips. It is the basis of many entrepreneurial successes and, because many business leaders discount it, innumerable failures.

While the current thinking in business schools holds that all someone with an idea needs to succeed are focus, clarity and a good business plan, I have found that bringing together a great team that’s united by strong motivation, determination and bravery is much more important. Let’s look at how to get started.

    FIND GOOD PEOPLE

The successes of Virgin businesses such as Active, Atlantic, Money and Mobile were all based on our assembling a great management team that had a vision, passion and a real sense of ownership.

Specifically, we look for leaders who have the ability to listen to feedback from employees and customers – this is crucial to keeping a service or product fresh and innovative. Often, when things start going wrong, you’ll notice that the staff members feel they are being ignored and good ideas are not bubbling to the top.

Leaders should have the character to make tough decisions and the passion and ability to inspire their staff and carry them through difficult times. Our best CEOs tend to be unconcerned about the size of their office or the thickness of the carpet.

REALISE THAT THE EMPLOYEES ARE THE BUSINESS

A successful business isn’t the product or service it sells, its supply chain or its corporate culture: It is a group of people bound together by a common purpose and vision. In Virgin’s case, we fly the same planes as our competitors and our gyms offer much of the same equipment as other gyms. What separates our businesses from the competition? Our employees.

The best designed business plan will come to nothing if it is not carried out by an enthusiastic and passionate staff. This is especially true when things go slightly wrong; a friendly and proactive team can often win people round, averting a potential disaster or even turning it to your benefit.

Earlier this year, a Virgin America flight was diverted from New York to an airport in nearby Connecticut due to bad weather. The passengers were stuck on the plane for many hours while the small airport struggled to cope with the huge number of extra planes. It took far too long.

Afterward, CEO David Cush himself called many of the passengers to apologise, which may have helped to give those customers a sense of all the Virgin staffers who had been worrying about them and working to fix the situation.

LOOK FOR THE BEST IN YOUR PEOPLE – LAVISH PRAISE, NEVER CRITICISE

Rather than focusing on mistakes, a leader needs to catch someone doing something right every day. If this culture of fostering employee development through praise and recognition starts at the top, it will go far toward stamping out the employee fear of failure that can stunt a business, particularly in its early days. When mistakes happen – which is inevitable – I always take the position that you have to learn from them and try not to dwell on what went wrong. It’s almost always better not to go over the obvious with the people involved. They know exactly what happened.

    DON’T TAKE YOURSELF TOO SERIOUSLY

We at Virgin pride ourselves on trying to find the fun in our businesses, by which I mean that we try to ensure that both our staff and customers feel a real sense of warmth and affection.

I have led from the front on this – dressing up in costumes, trying all manner of stunts (not all going 100-per-cent right!), and generally showing that I do not take myself too seriously. My approach will not work for all businesses, but keeping a sense of perspective and not allowing management to be seen as aloof will help keep your staff onside.

To foster employees’ sense of warm, personal interest in clients’ needs, it’s crucial to ensure that everyone who works with you enjoys what he or she is doing, which means that everyone must be proud of the company. This is vital to building lasting success and ensuring your service has an edge over the competition.

To find employees who will take such an interest in our customers, we look for people who show genuine enthusiasm and character.

We have a bit of an advantage over our competitors, partly because of our brand and partly because our roots include having hired people to work in the music industry, and now aviation and space, all of which attract real enthusiasts.

    JUST DO IT

Finally, to succeed in business, you must have the bravery to give it a go. Starting a business is a big risk; an entrepreneur needs resolve and conviction to overcome the early hurdles. Most start-ups fail in the first few years, so a key ingredient of success is the ability to pick yourself up and try again.

If it starts to look like your business is not going to make it, some on your team might start to lose courage. At that crucial time, your knowledge of the people factor may make or break your company.

  • RIM Response Apple

    July 19th, 2010

RIM followed suit. In a statement signed by co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, RIM gave Apple a quick and concise corporate tongue lashing:

Apple’s attempt to draw RIM into Apple’s self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple’s claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public’s understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple’s difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage.  One thing is for certain, RIM’s customers don’t need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple.

That ladies and gentlemen is how not to mince words. It is only fair. If you want to pitch, you have to catch. Right Apple?

FAZZT Race Team owner Andre Azzi asserts his commitment to the future of IndyCar racing in Canada

FAZZT Race Team owner Andre Azzi asserts his commitment
to the future of IndyCar racing in Canada

TORONTO (July 14, 2010) – Canadians should be able to compete in international motorsports; companies and investors should be able to support talented Canadian drivers while reaping at least some commercial benefits from it.  This is what Andre Azzi, a successful Canadian businessman and CEO/owner of FAZZT Race Team, announced today just days before the country hosts its two IZOD IndyCar Series events – the Honda Indy Toronto and Edmonton. During a meeting held today in Toronto with members of the press Mr. Azzi committed to fielding at least one Canadian driver in the IZOD IndyCar Series and to spearheading the rebirth of a Canadian driver development program.
“This country has a wonderful history in motorsports,” said Azzi.  “I still remember watching Gilles Villeneuve and admire how his achievements brought so many Canadians, and people from other nationalities, together.  After careful reflection, I have made a decision to spend the next years of my life building a Canadian race team and driver development program that ensures that young drivers in this country get the support they need to reach the higher echelons of the sport.  No one can do this alone, so I will be reaching out to corporate Canada to join me in filling this important need.”
In less than a decade, Andre Azzi has applied his energy and skills to create and grow companies in a variety of sectors including insurance, brokerage, retail, licensed products and real estate. When it comes to sponsors supporting his vision, Azzi sees nothing but “wins”.
“As Canada’s only team in IndyCar racing, we can offer sponsors ratings, a full schedule of events, exciting spokespersons, solid fan base and, here in Canada, an uncluttered business platform,” said Azzi. “We are passionate and confident about our vision, and are well under way.”
In the mid 90s, at a time when legislation allowed for tobacco sponsorships, Canada boasted a successful driver development program that helped groom a remarkable line-up of drivers including Jacques Villeneuve, Paul Tracy and Alex Tagliani.
“Thanks to the support and training we received on and off the track, we’ve been able to compete at the highest levels and represent our country around the world,” said Tagliani, who drives the #77 Bowers and Wilkins-sponsored FAZZT Race Team vehicle. “I feel very enthusiastic about Andre’s vision and hope that Canadian companies come on board in support of our collective dream.”
Canada has enjoyed an impressive history in motorsports, but insiders and fans worry about the roster of future Canadian drivers.
“Canada is showing hints of a racing renaissance,” said Azzi. “We now have a Canadian team thanks to our sponsors Bowers & Wilkins, Hot Wheels(R) and others, and leading organizations are starting to reinvest in a variety of racing properties. I am committed to making FAZZT Race Team a driver of this renewal.”
Mr. Azzi broke into the motorsport world a year ago when he helped to launch FAZZT Race Team, the only Canadian-owned team in the IZOD IndyCar Series. The team also features Alex Tagliani as a part owner and primary driver – the only Canadian driver to enjoy a full 18-event schedule in the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series season.

Apple iPhone 4 gets torn apart

    June 23rd, 2010

We weren’t the only ones to get an iPhone 4 early — iFixIt just released one of their famous teardowns, and while nothing is really new, we do have confirmation on some of the bigger points:

    • RAM is confirmed to be 512MB compared to 256MB in the iPad and iPhone 3GS
    • The two screws on the bottom allow removal of the back glass plate, not the front LCD as with previous models
    • The battery, while not user accessible, is easily replaceable — and huge!
    • The entire from LCD assembly will require replacement if damaged. On earlier models people would buy either the LCD or digitizer separately and adhere them together, but with Apple’s new manufacturing process, this won’t really be possible
    • The integration of cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth radios into the case assembly is “genius”. We agree

So, interested in checking out some more shots of the iPhone 4’s insides? Couple more photos after the jump, and hit iFixIt for the rest!
